Summary:

To provide statistical support for ongoing projects related to demography and field epidemiology. Projects that will be supported include; trends in mortality among children and adults in Kilifii, the burden of adult morbidity in the Kilifi DSS, among others

Reporting Lines:

The post holder will report to the Cluster Statistician and work closely with the Study PIs and the Senior Statistician in the Programme.

Job Dimensions:

Staff operating at this grade range deal with non-standard work situations more regularly than staff at lower grades and take decisions often relating to the interpretation of standard operating procedures.

The post holder will work with project managers, study coordinators, trial monitors, database managers, and other statisticians in the cluster and in the Programme.

Key Responsibilities:

The post holder will take responsibility for day to day management of statistical aspects of the studies he or she is assigned to, for example:
• Developing study analysis plan.
• Providing advice on randomization and frequently observing randomization.
• Liaising with trial and data managers and programmers about data quality and missing data, verifying data accuracy and validity.
• Scheduling and preparing reports of analyses for independent Data Monitoring Committees, Steering Committees, and publications.
• Actively interrogating the data for discrepancies, errors, and missing data, in order to verify the accuracy and validity of the data. Reporting and liaising with trial investigators, data managers and programmers on the quality of the data, and resolving any errors according to the study protocol.
• Discussing and interpreting results with colleagues and collaborators in the trial/study.
• Ensuring deadlines and project milestones relating to data and analyses are met, coordinating with other members of staff and external collaborators as necessary
• Assisting with the production of summary tables and graphics for interim and final analyses.

Skills and Competence:
• Excellent organisational and communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a team
• Excellent computer skills and familiarity with one or more statistical packages (including Stata, R, SPSS or SAS) plus knowledge of any SQL-compliant DBMS (e.g. MS-Access, MS-SQL, MySQL Postgres, Oracle, DB2 etc).
• Demonstrated research experience, preferably in the health sciences.
• Proficiency with statistical and data management procedures (data cleaning, manipulation, summarization, tables, listings, graphics, and inferential statistical output), and report generation.
• Experience with GIS analysis is an added advantage.

Qualification and Experience:
• A Degree in mathematics or statistics and 2 years experience in similar position with demonstrated research experience, preferably in the health sciences.
• Experience with GIS analysis is an added advantage.
