The deadline for returning the Elks National Foundation’s “Most Valuable Student” Scholarship applications is set for Dec. 1.
Applications are still available for high school seniors to apply for a scholarship award in the Elks National Foundation’s annual “Most Valuable Student” contest. Five hundred four-year awards for the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years, ranging from $1,000-$15,000 per year, will be made in a nationwide competition to the highest-rated students in the 2011 competition, and scholarships will total $2.3 million.
There are identical, separate awards for young men and women. Applications may be made by students in the graduating class of a high school or its related equivalent, who are citizens of the United States and residents within the jurisdiction of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Financial need, leadership and scholarship are the criteria by which applicants are judged. The New Hampshire State Elks Scholarship Committee will be in charge of judging applications forwarded by the local Elks Lodges. All scholarships are in the form of certificates of award issued by the Chicago office of the Elks National Foundation, conditioned upon the enrolment of the winner in an accredited U.S. college or university.
Applications may be picked up from area high school guidance departments, at the Nashua Lodge of Elks’ home on Daniel Webster Highway South, Nashua, or at the home of Albert W. Savage, scholarship chairman, at 86 Robinson Road, Nashua. For more information, call Savage at 888-0064.
After all returned scholarship applications are processed and verified, they will be forwarded to the New Hampshire State Elks Scholarship Committee for judging. Applicants who do not receive a four-year scholarship will be eligible for a one-year scholarship from the New Hampshire State Elks Association.
Thirty-nine area students received one-year scholarships last year plus two students were awarded four-year scholarships for $1,000 per year.
Completed applications must be returned to the Steward at the Nashua Lodge of Elks or to the home of Savage by Dec. 1.
