University of Nairobi - UNITID Fellowship Programme on-the-Job Training Opportunities

The University of Nairobi (UoN) in collaboration with the University of Washington (UW) through the support of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established an on–the –job training fellowship program for individuals interested in Health Economics.

This is a merit based program whose aim is to build capacity for leadership and management in public and private health sectors. Fellows will be selected based on their potential for commitment to health service provision in the public or private sectors.

Upon completion of the fellowship, they will receive certificate award of the University of Nairobi.

Selected fellows will undergo a 2-year full time non-degree competency based training program at the University of Nairobi and selected host institutions. This will be an exciting opportunity for fellows to benefit from professional on-the-job enrichment through a taught component and attachments in public and private health related institutions in the country.

Fellows will further have the opportunity to undertake a funded project designed to improve the efficiency of the host organization. During the training, fellows will receive a reasonable stipend to meet their expenses.

Health Economics Track

Applicants must be holders of a Masters degree in Economics or related field from a recognized university.

Candidates who demonstrate Familiarity with the Kenya health care system and HIV/AIDS programs will have an added advantage.

The program is designed to meet the public demand for Health Economists. On completion, fellows will be expected to have acquired knowledge and skills in:
1. Concepts and processes of health financing in health programs
2. Cost –benefit analysis of health programs
3. Analysis and application of current models in health sector planning and reform
4. Health economic evaluations and decision making
5. Health financing methods and models and their application to health care programs.
6. Macro and micro-economic indicators of the HIV and AIDS disease burden
Fellows selected must be willing to be posted in a host institution anywhere in the republic.

Health Informatics Track

Applicants should be in possession of a Masters Degree in either Informatics, Information Systems Computer Science, Statistics or Health Sciences. Candidates who demonstrate familiarity with the Kenya health care system and HIV/AIDS programs will be an added advantage. The program is designed to meet the public demand for Health Informatics.

On completion, fellows will be expected to have acquired knowledge and skills in:
1. Integrated health information systems
2. Health informatics tools for managing and processing health data
3. Designing and developing health databases
4. Innovative applications of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in health
5. Health information security issues and solutions
6. Legal and ethical issues in development and use of health information systems
Fellows selected must be willing to be posted in a host institution anywhere in the republic.

HIV Program Management Track

Applicants must be holders of a Master’s degree in Medicine, Public Health or Management from a recognized University. Candidates who demonstrate familiarity with the Kenya health care system and HIV/AIDS programs will have an added advantage.

The program is designed to meet the public demand for Health Program Managers. On completion, fellows will be expected to have acquired knowledge and skills in:
• Integration of policies and goals from the international and national HIV/AIDS response into local programming.
• Planning, implementation, monitoring & evaluation of innovative evidence-informed HIV/AIDS programs
• Development & implementation of supply chain management systems for essential commodities to support HIV programs.
• Mobilization and management of resources for efficient HIV program development and management.
Fellows selected must be willing to be posted in a host institution anywhere in the republic.

Opportunities to host UNITID Fellows

The UNITID Fellowship Program seeks to invite applications from institutions that can host fellows.

HIV/AIDS programs have made tremendous strides in addressing HIV in Kenya, however, many indigenous institutions remain inadequately prepared in terms of human resources and management skills to maintain and continue with successful HIV prevention, care and treatment interventions.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) in collaboration with the University of Washington (UW) are supporting the Kenyan National HIV response through a training fellowship program.

The UNITID FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM is led by the University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID) and funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for
AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This 2-year fellowship program focuses on three tracks:
1. HIV Science, Epidemiology and Program Management
2. Health Informatics
3. Health Economics
The program goal is to develop senior leadership to support the Kenya HIV/AIDS program. Fellows admitted into this program undergo practical on-the-job training through attachment to public and private health departments and organizations across the country.

Fellows will spend 18 months in the host institutions supported by a supervisor from UNITID and a mentor from the host institution.

During the attachment, fellows are expected to provide mentorship to host institution staff through short courses and undertake a funded project to help the host institution improve its operations.

The fellows will be highly qualified individuals with postgraduate training in their area of specialization and will be expected to contribute significantly to advancing the host institutions’ vision, goals and objectives during their attachment.

Selected institutions will receive minimal funding to facilitate hosting of the fellows and capacity building of host institution staff through in-house training.

The operations of host institutions will also be enhanced through fellows’ projects.

Eligible institutions include Government departments/hospitals, public/private /faith-based institutions, NGOs, CBOs and working in public health and preferably in HIV/AIDS and related areas. Institutions willing to host fellows will be required to:
1. Justify need to host a UNITID fellow by describing the core functions of the institution and the roles that fellows in one or more track areas could play.
2. Demonstrate capacity to provide infrastructure and experiences that will facilitate acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills by the fellow.
3. Demonstrate capacity to provide support and mentorship to senior fellows in one or more tracks.

8. If an NGO, length of project in which the fellow will be attached
9. Indicate their preferred training track(s) for which they propose to host the fellow, location where the fellow will be based and the institutional profile.
