Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Australia has introduced a new scholarship in honor of former Indonesian government minister and statesman Frans Seda .

The Frans Seda English Language Scholarship was launched last month in Darwin by the chief minister of Australia’s Northern Territory, Paul Henderson, and Barney Glover, vice chancellor of Charles Darwin University.

“This scholarship honors the great memory of Frans Seda, who played an important role in building relations between Australia and Indonesia,” Australia’s ambassador to Indonesia, Greg Moriarty, said on the embassy’s official Web site.

“Frans Seda was a man of principle who worked tirelessly to further promote the strong links between the two countries through political, trade, transport, educational, cultural and sporting ties . ”

Seda, a former government minister, served as an adviser to three Indonesian presidents and was awarded an honorary Member of the Order of Australia for his work in strengthening trade links with Canberra.

The annual scholarship will be awarded to three Indonesian students at Charles Darwin University to improve their fluency in English, and to three Northern Territory students to study Indonesian.

The scholarship is worth almost $60,000 over three years, and will cover tuition for up to 10 weeks of intensive language training.

Professor Glover praised Seda, who died in 2009, as a great friend to Australia .

“The Frans Seda English Scholarship … is a wonderful mark of respect for Dr. Seda and his work in building relations,” he said.
